Question:
If VA awards me the one-time grant for a vehicle, is there a time limit by which I must use the grant?
Answer:
There is no time limit by which you must use the one-time automobile grant. However, before you use the grant, which is currently $19,817, you must submit VA Form 21-4502 (Application for Automobile and Other Conveyance and Adaptive Equipment). This form must be signed by VA under the section titled, “Certificate of Eligibility” before you can purchase and take possession of a vehicle. Once you take possession of the vehicle, you must sign the required section of the form and the seller must submit the form and invoice to VA for payment.
Failure to have the pre-approval from VA will result in the grant not being paid for the automobile purchase. Due to the VA’s backlog, you should submit the form at least 3-6 months prior to when you plan to purchase a vehicle.
