Question: I was in the National Guard for two years in 1957. I am trying to get a VA loan to refinance my house; do I qualify?

Answer: A veteran’s eligibility for a VA home loan guaranty depends on when the veteran served, the length of service, and the character of discharge (must be other than dishonorable conditions). There is no minimum length of service for veterans discharged due to a service connected disability.

A veteran is eligible is he or she meets any of these requirements:

  • Served 181 days during peacetime (Active Duty)
  • Served 90 days during wartime (Active Duty)
  • Served 6 years of honorable service in the Reserves or National Guard
  • You are the spouse of a service member who was killed in the line of duty
