Question:

I am 67 years old and currently paid at the 100% rate by VA based on not being able to work (unemployable). I would like to return to work as a seasonal tennis coach, making about $3,400 annually. I read somewhere that I can make a certain amount and still get my 100% from the VA. Is this true?

Answer:

If you are engaged in marginal employment, which is defined as earned annual income that does not exceed the poverty threshold for one person; currently $11,173 (2013 US Census Bureau Poverty Threshold) for a single individual over the age of 65 with no dependents; you can work as a seasonal tennis coach and still receive your full VA compensation at the 100% rate due to Individual Unemployability (IU).

Marginal employment is not considered substantial gainful employment. Please be aware, however, that VA will evaluate whether your seasonal job as a tennis coach is proof you have the capacity to secure gainful employment.
