The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a new grant opportunity totaling $42 million to support homeless Veterans and those at risk of homelessness. These grants will fund legal services provided by eligible organizations.

Organizations interested in applying can request up to $500,000 per grant. These funds will cover a two-year operational period, from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2027. The deadline to submit applications is July 7 at 4 p.m. ET.

How These Grants Will Help Veterans

These grants, part of the VA’s Legal Services for Veterans Grant Program, aim to assist Veterans with a variety of critical legal needs, including:

  • Preventing homelessness: Providing legal representation in landlord-tenant disputes to help Veterans avoid eviction.
  • Family and personal matters: Assisting with child support, custody, or estate planning court proceedings.
  • Accessing benefits: Helping Veterans secure essential benefits like disability compensation.
  • Addressing criminal legal issues: Defending Veterans in criminal cases that could worsen or prolong homelessness, such as those involving outstanding warrants, fines, or driver’s license revocation.

VA Secretary Doug Collins emphasized the impact of these services, stating, “Services to help Veterans obtain benefits, maintain access to housing and navigate other common legal issues can make a huge difference in preventing or resolving homelessness. These important grants will help us make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of Veterans.”
