Next month, VA will begin mailing new ID cards to veterans currently enrolled in the VA health care system. The new Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) will no longer contain sensitive, identifiable information. Rather, the card will possess a magnetic stripe containing the information VA needs to open a veteran’s file.
The primary purpose of the VHIC is to provide proof of identification for veterans attending appointments. Any veteran enrolled in VA healthcare is eligible and should have one.
If you are already enrolled in VA health care, you will automatically be mailed a new VHIC. You don’t need to have your photo retaken. If you need to update your mailing address with VA, please call 1-877-222-VETS to make certain that your VHIC arrives at your correct address without delay.
Here is a list of frequently asked questions and answers to assist you:
Q: What will the new VHIC look like and what features will it display?
A: The new VHIC will list basic identifying information about you, including your photo. It will also give your last branch of military service and identify special awards.
Q: Do I need to order a new VHIC or appear in person?
A: No, however, please make certain VA has your most current address on file to avoid any delays in receiving your new VHIC by mail.
Q: Should I keep my old Veteran I.D. Card (VIC)?
A: You do not need to keep this card. VA recommends that you destroy it.
Q: Can I use the VHIC to obtain store discounts?
A: Certain businesses on occasion provide special benefits for veterans. Whether or not the card will be accepted as proof of veteran status will depend on the business. However, the VHIC is a valid federal I.D. card.
