United Spinal Association’s VetsFirst program has teamed up with Myomo Inc. to offer our members the opportunity to receive a MyoPro® myoelectric upper limb orthosis.
How to Qualify
The MyoPro orthosis is ordered by a physician after an evaluation and is furnished solely by MyoPro certified orthotics and prosthetics professionals.
The Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers and VA affiliated orthotic and prosthetic centers across the country currently fit individuals with spinal cord injuries with the MyoPro. Veterans may also be able to qualify for special programs that provide additional services in support of obtaining the MyoPro.
Veterans interested in learning more about the MyoPro including receiving an evaluation for the device can do so in the following ways:
- Contact Myomo at info@myomo.com or 877-736-9666. A Myomo representative will contact you to discuss the evaluation center nearest your home.
- Search for a MyoPro certified orthotic and prosthetic provider near your location. A listing of certified practices can be found at myomo.com in the “Patients & Caregivers” section.
- Visit myopro.com/veteran to learn more about the benefits of this device.
How Does The Myopro Work
The user is completely controlling their own arm; the orthosis amplifies the weak muscle signal to help bend and move the arm. With the orthosis, a paralyzed individual, such as one who has suffered a brachial plexus nerve injury, spinal cord injury or other neuromuscular disorder, may be able to perform activities of daily living including feeding, reaching and lifting.
Who Can Benefit From The Myopro?
Other criteria may include:
• The ability to move the shoulder forward and maintain that position.
• The ability to volitionally move the arm(s) from the lap and position it on the arm rest, keeping it there without support or assistance.
• Low to moderate tone in the arm. An occupational therapist can determine the level of tone.
• No history of chronic shoulder dislocation.
• The ability to have someone fully straighten and bend the arm without any pain.
