The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced a historic $1.17 billion in grants awarded to 680 community organizations nationwide to prevent and end homelessness among veterans and their families.
The grant funding builds upon recent homeless outreach milestones—including placing over 51,000 unhoused veterans into permanent, stable housing during Fiscal Year 2025. The new grant awards will take effect on October 1, 2026.
How the Grant Funding Is Distributed:
- Supportive Services for Veteran Families ($855 Million): Distributed via one-year SSVF grants to provide case management, rapid re-housing, emergency rental assistance, and eviction prevention for low-income veteran households.
- Grant and Per Diem Program ($318 Million): Awarded via three-year GPD grants to fund transitional housing, service centers, and specialized housing for women veterans, elderly veterans, and those with chronic mental or physical health conditions.
- Focus on Prevention & Stability: Funds target root causes of housing instability by connecting veterans directly with healthcare, job training, and legal assistance.
