A new White House executive order, Accelerating Access to Veterans’ Benefits and Employment Opportunities, signed on September 8, 2026, aims to eliminate long-standing bureaucratic delays between the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The executive order directly targets the record-sharing lag that often leaves newly separated service members waiting months for disability compensation, healthcare enrollment, and employment assistance.

Key Provisions & Operational Changes:

  • Immediate Service Record Transfer: Directs federal agencies to ensure all Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF) and Service Treatment Records (STRs) are transferred to the VA immediately upon a service member’s discharge, replacing the legacy 90-to-180-day transfer lag.
  • Faster Claims Processing: The VA projects that automatic, continuous record access will reduce disability claim processing times for recently separated veterans by an additional 20 to 30 days on average.
  • Single-Source AI Tools: Orders the deployment of updated digital systems and secure artificial intelligence tools within 180 days to streamline benefit applications and improve data interoperability.
  • Overhauled Career Transitioning: Enhances the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) by directly connecting departing service members with matching civilian job openings, technical education, and VA claims representatives prior to separation.
