Question:
I am the widow of a 100% service-connected veteran. I receive dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC) payments. What I would like to know is whether I also qualify for a pension? Is my DIC payment counted as income? Right now, the only income I receive is DIC, which is $1473 a month. I am struggling to get bills paid and put food on the table.
Answer:
The VA does not count DIC as income. However, a widow cannot receive both a survivor’s death pension and DIC at the same time. Of those benefits, DIC is higher.
If you are in need of help with activities of daily living and have medical evidence to support that need, you can submit a claim to your local VA Regional Office for Aid and Attendance. Activities of daily living include tasks such as bathing and getting dressed. If your claim is granted, you will be awarded an additional $301 per month.
