Sometimes it’s easier to start describing something by what it isn’t. For me there are many things our Flag does not represent.

I don’t see the halls of congress with it’s hord of hustlers whose names are preceded by the mandatory "Honorable". Though the Flag flies in front of every VA in the nation, it’s not the Veterans Administration or any other government agency that fills my mind and heart with America when viewing our Flag.

Rather, it is people. The sturdy enduring American of past and present whether native born or transplanted from foreign shores. It is these patriotic and resilient folks who have hauled the weight of American change, dug out from economic chaos and political turnoil, fought our wars and buried their heroic sons and daughters along the way without ever breaking patriotic stride. It is them that I see. They are the true keepers of our banner.

Like a visualization from a Woodie Guthrie song, America is about its people. If our nation has achieved greatness there is only one reason for it- our people have achieved it. To me our Flag is living, it’s real, it’s all Americans.
